Black Day 2023 Date

It is celebrated by Singles in South Korea. It’s the third ‘marketing day’ after Valentine’s Day and White Day. This day is reserved for single people in South Korea. This year, Black Day will be celebrated on Friday, April 14, 2023.

History of Black Day in South Korea

In South Korea, both Valentine’s Day and White Day are dedicated to exchanging gifts with lovers. Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th when women buy gifts for men. Initially, Black Day didn’t exist following Valentine’s Day and White Day which became popular. With all the love holidays (14 to be exact) in Korea, many believe that single people should be recognized. White Day is celebrated on March 14, when men respond with gifts of their own, including chocolate. Since both seasons fall on the 14th, additional holidays have been created by the South Korean government for all other months to continue the tradition. The process has also targeted marketers.

Black Day Meaning

It is designed to mirror the romantic aspect of Valentine’s Day and White Day. Whereas chocolates received on Valentine’s Day are defined as a sign of a man’s popularity and chocolates given on White Day are used only for love, Black Day is aimed at people, especially singles, who did not receive any gifts on either holiday.

Black Day in South Korea Celebration

There are lots of people who see this Day as a chance to celebrate with friends and family. The word celebration is nothing to do with it. Several people celebrate Black Day with their friends to embrace their singleness, as there is less societal pressure to have a relationship in Korea today. Other people celebrate the day with comfort foods.

How to Celebrate Black Day

1. Consume Food

The most eaten dish on this Day is jjajangmyeon, a popular Korean black sauce noodle. People eat jjajangmyeon on this Day because it is a simple, yet delicious dish that one can get at a low price. Black leaves, danmuji, tangsuyuk, and kimchi are popular side dishes served with jjajangmyeon.

2. Grab the discounts

Many restaurants and businesses use the day to promote discounts on their products. Restaurant owners expect their sales to double, even triple their usual prices. Black coffee and jjajangmyeon are two popular snacks that sell out in no time.

3. Attend an event

People use this as an opportunity to promote music, food, clothing, competitions, and sex support. Participate in any of these to enjoy the day and remove your boredom.

4. Wear black

On this day, bachelors who have not received gifts for two previous days gather together dressed in black clothes to ‘grace themselves’ for black-colored foods, especially jajangmyeon.

5. Organise singles' party

Organize a party on this day inviting all your singles friends. Exchange gifts with them to forget the pain of singleness.

Black Day in Other Countries

Like Korea, other countries around the world have their own Black Day. In the United States, February 15th is the day that is celebrated as Single Awareness Day, the day after Valentine’s Day. China celebrates November 11 every year as Singles' Day. It represents single sticks and similar to Korea, China promotes a lot of discounts for singles.
