The life and accomplishments of Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez (Cesario Estrada Chavez) was an American farm worker, civil rights activist, and labor leader who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) with Dolores Huerta, presently the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) labor union, which represents farm workers in the United States.

Born on 31 March 1927 in Yuma to a Mexican-American family, he commenced life as a handyman before joining the United States Navy. He lived near poverty as a child, which eventually developed his views. After quitting the Navy, he joined the Community Service Organization, a civil rights organization through which he helped workers (mainly minorities) register to vote through the 1960s.

He later started organizing strikes by farm workers demanding better working environments. Encouraged by Mahatma Gandhi and other revolutionaries, Chávez used nonviolent methods such as picketing and boycotts to pressure the peasants and the government to meet the strikers’ demands. Perturbed about his actions, the FBI took notice and opened a file on his deeds.

Although Chávez was investigated by the FBI throughout his life and reprimanded by right-wing groups and politicians, he became a prominent figure in American history and the labor movement through his tireless efforts to improve the lives of farm workers and social advocacy for justice and civil rights. After a long phase of courageous work for social justice, Chávez died of natural causes at the age of 66 (April 23, 1993).
