Coming-of-age ceremonies mark one’s ending of adolescence and arrival at the age of maturity.  The ceremonies take place in the morning at city offices throughout Japan. Government officials give speeches, and small gifts are given to newly met mature citizens.

Lots of women celebrate the day by wearing furisode, a style of kimono hanging in long sleeves, and zōri sandals. Men sometimes wear traditional clothing (a kimono with a dark hakama), but today many men prefer to wear formal western clothing such as a suit and tie rather than the traditional hakama.
