What is Independent Czechoslovak State Day?

Czechoslovak Independent State Day is an annual observation in the Czech Republic which is held on October 28 to commemorate the founding of Czechoslovakia when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

History of Czech Founding Day

The territory of the Czech Republic belonged to the Habsburg Monarchy until 1918 when it became part of Czechoslovakia or Czech-Slovakia. Czechoslovakia became one of the first multi-party parliamentary democracies in Europe and was able to cope with the international depression of the 1930s.

In 1938, the Sudetenland became part of Germany, following the Munich Agreement, which then lost more territory to Hungary and Poland. Between 1939 and 1945, the state ceased to exist as Slovakia declared independence and later the remaining eastern territories became part of Hungary, and the remaining Czech lands came to be dependent on the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

During World War II, Czech lands were occupied by Nazi Germany. The German reign of terror lasted until 1948 when the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia ended in a communist coup. Communist rule ended in 1989 during the famous Velvet Revolution. On 1st January 1993, Czechoslovakia was peacefully dissolved into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Independent Czechoslovak State Day Celebrations

The Czech Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to the recipients on this exciting occasion at the thousand-year-old Prague Castle. Afterwards, the government lays a floral wreath at the tomb of President Masaryk, the war leader and first president of Czechoslovakia.

A lot of people gather around this historic palace and witness the ceremony. The programme is broadcast live on television so that people who cannot attend the ceremony or do not live in Prague can also witness this Czech Republic Independence Day. At night the palace hosts a party reserved for politically and socially important people and is heavily decorated with lights.

All the official and unofficial celebrations in the Czech Republic are devoted to marking the day. On Independence Day, it is a tradition for urban centres to visit galleries in Prague, like the Jewish Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Prague Museum of Public Transport. Students celebrate this day in schools and universities or visit prominent places, of historical and architectural interest for research purposes.

Czech Republic Flag

Czech Republic Flag

The flag of the Czech Republic (Czech: státní vlajka České republiky) or flag of Czechia (Czech: vlajka Česka), also known as Czech Flag (Czech: česká vlajka), is consisting of two equal horizontal bands in white (top) and red formed by a black isosceles triangle viewed from the lifting side.

It is similar to the flag of the former Czechoslovakia which was adopted 102 years ago on 30 March 1920 and as the Czech Republic on 1 January 1993 after dissolution. The flag was adopted and designed by Jaroslav Kursa. It has an official proportion of 2:3 and it is used as the national flag, civil flag and state ensign.

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the Czech Republic kept the Czechoslovak flag. However, Slovakia adopted its new flag. The Nazis banned the flag in 1939 because they formed a government nominally in control of Bohemia and Moravia and for a horizontal tricolour of white, red and blue used for the duration of the war. Later, the 1920 flag was again back in use in 1945.

Czech Republic Symbols

The national emblem of Czechoslovak was depicted by a red shield in the form of a pavis hussita, topped by a five-pointed star and a white two-tailed lion rampant and a red shield on the breastplate a blue silhouette of Mount Kriváò and a golden coloured bonfire.

Currently, the Czech lion is also used on its own as the symbol of the Czech Republic. The smallest state emblem consists of a red coat of arms consisting of a sliver split-tailed lion rampant with a golden crown and golden claws.

Czech Republic Motto

"Pravda vítězí" (Czech) (trans."Truth prevails") is the official national motto of the Czech Republic.  The motto is placed on the standard of the President of the Czech Republic, which the Czech Constitution declares a national symbol.

Czech Republic Anthem

"Kde domov můj" (English translation: "Where My Home Is") is the national anthem of the Czech Republic. It was written by the composer František Škroup and the playwright Josef Kajetán Tyl in 1834 and adopted in 1918 and later in 1990.
