Dhanteras meaning
The word "Dhanteras" comes from two Sanskrit words: "dhan", meaning wealth, and "teras", meaning thirteen. On this day, it is believed that buying new items associated with wealth and prosperity brings good luck and prosperity. This day is also known as "Dhanvantari Trayodashi" or "Dhanatrayodashi" as it marks the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari, the Ayurvedic God.
History of Dhanteras
Based on Hindu mythology, there is a story behind the festival of Dhanvantari Trayodashi. It is said that the son of King Hima had to die from a snake bite four days after his marriage. His wife did a trick to prevent her husband's death as she placed gold and silver coins and glittering jewelry at the entrance to their bedroom and flashed lamps everywhere. The light of the lamps shone on the gold, silver, and jewels, creating a dazzling effect that drew Yama, the God of Death, away from the prince. Since that day, Dhanatrayodashi became a day of buying new goods, associated with wealth and prosperity.
