History of New Year Eve

The Gregorian calendar which is in use today was initiated in Rome, by the Vatican under Pope Gregory XIII in October 1582. The Gregorian calendar is inspired by the solar year replacing the ancient Roman calendar which was based on the lunar cycle of the Earth. The Gregorian calendar is a modified edition of the Julian calendar, introduced during the reign of the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar around 44 BC, adopting the suggestion of the Greek astronomer and mathematician Sosigenes of Alexandria.

On October 4, 1582, the transition from the lunar cycle calendar to the solar year calendar required the elimination of a few days. Hence, October 4, 1582, became October 15, 1582, and it was announced by Pope Gregory. It was also announced by the Pope's decree that the new year would officially begin on January 1 instead of April 1.
