National Author’s Day History
The celebration of Author's Day was born in 1928 when Nellie Verne Burt McPherson, president of the Bement, Illinois Women’s Club, developed an initiative to honor American writers. McPherson was a teacher and a bibliophile throughout her life. While recuperating during World War I in hospital, she wrote a letter to the fiction writer Irving Bacheller where she expressed her excitement on reading "Eben Holden's Last Day A-Fishing".
Upon receiving the fan letter, Bacheller forwarded an autographed copy of one of his stories. McPherson was overwhelmed and then realized she would never be able to properly thank her for what he had given her. McPherson decided to show her gratitude through a National Author’s Day proposal to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. In May 1929, the club approved a resolution to celebrate National Author Day in honor of American authors. The United States Department of Commerce acknowledged this day in 1949.
