Bahrain National Day
Bahrain National Day

Bahrain National Day arrives on December 16 every year commemorating the ascension of the late emir (ruler) Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa to the throne. Although August 15 is the exact date Bahrain gained independence from the British, the kingdom does not officially recognize the date. Instead, December 16 is a national holiday and is celebrated for 2 days. The main event takes place at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Bahrain National Day 2024 Date

Bahrain (the Kingdom of Bahrain) is an island country in West Asia. The National Day of Bahrain, which is celebrated on December 16 annually, is a two-day public holiday in Bahrain. The holiday is scheduled to last two days, until December 17th. Educational institutions, government offices, and most businesses are closed these days. This year, Bahrain's national day will be celebrated on Friday and Saturday, December 16–17, 2024.

History of Bahrain National Day

Bahrain, the island country, was a British Protectorate in the 1960s. Bahrain was forbidden international relations with other countries without Britain’s consent. Dissatisfaction with British rule led to many protests, arguments and conflicts increased. On August 15, 1971, finally, an agreement was signed between the two nations that freed Bahrain from the British Protectorate. Four months after the treaty, the British left, and thus Bahrain became an independent nation.

No wonder Bahrainis believe true independence came when emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa ascended the throne on December 16, 1971. The emir's rule meant that Bahrain as a country symbolically came into its own after the British exit, despite handing over the reign in August.

The national flag of Bahrain (Arabic: علم البحرين) is a white field on the hoist side by a large red field separated on the fly by five white triangles in a zigzag pattern. The five white triangles in the flag signify the five pillars of Islam. It was adopted on 14 February 2024 with a proportion of 3:5.

National Anthem of Bahrain

The Baḥraynunā (Arabic: بحريننا), is the national anthem of Bahrain. Its English translation is "Our Bahrain". Originally composed instrumentally in 1942, the lyrics were added in 1985. It was changed in 2002 as the country evolved from an emirate to a kingdom.
