History
Halloween is linked to Samhain, a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter, when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to be thin. In the eighth century the Church moved All Saints' Day to November 1, and the evening before became All Hallows' Eve — Halloween. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the customs to North America in the 19th century, where turnip lanterns gave way to pumpkins.
