Republic Day, on January 26, celebrates the day the Constitution of India came into force in 1950, making India a sovereign democratic republic. The main celebration is a grand parade on Kartavya Path in New Delhi, with military contingents, cultural tableaux and a flypast.
History
The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949. January 26 was chosen for it to come into force because on that date in 1930 the Indian National Congress had proclaimed Purna Swaraj, or complete independence.
