History
The UN Charter was signed in San Francisco on June 26, 1945, and came into force on October 24, 1945, after it was ratified by a majority of signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council. In 1947 the General Assembly declared October 24 as United Nations Day. The UN began with 51 member states and now has 193.
