Overview

World Cancer Day takes place every year on February 4. It unites people, communities and governments to raise awareness of cancer, encourage prevention and early detection, and push for fair access to treatment and care.

The day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), which runs a multi-year campaign so that messages can build over time.

History

World Cancer Day was founded at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris on February 4, 2000, where the Charter of Paris Against Cancer was signed. The charter called for improved research, prevention and patient services, and named February 4 as World Cancer Day.

Since then the UICC has coordinated the day, with campaigns such as "I Am and I Will" (2019–2021), "Close the Care Gap" (2022–2024) and "United by Unique" (2025–2027).

Why it matters

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Many cancers can be prevented by reducing risks such as tobacco use, harmful alcohol use, physical inactivity and certain infections, and many more can be treated successfully when found early. Awareness helps people recognise warning signs, take part in screening and support those living with cancer.

How to celebrate

1

Book a screening

Ask your doctor which cancer screenings are right for your age and history.

2

Support someone

Offer practical help — a meal, a ride, a listening ear — to someone going through treatment.

3

Wear the colours

Wear blue and orange, the colours of World Cancer Day, and explain why.

4

Make one healthy change

Quit tobacco, move more or cut down on alcohol — small steps reduce risk.
