Overview
World Wetlands Day, on February 2, celebrates marshes, swamps, mangroves, peatlands, rivers and lakes. Wetlands purify water, reduce floods, store carbon and are home to a huge variety of life — yet they are disappearing faster than forests.
History
The Convention on Wetlands was signed in Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971. World Wetlands Day has been celebrated since 1997, and the UN General Assembly made it an official UN day in 2021.
How to celebrate
