King Bhumibol’s birthday was traditionally celebrated with festivities and candlelit events. Previously, Thai people used to descend the streets to greet the King on his birthday. People stayed outside the night before to find a spot and watch the king as he appeared and spoke.
Thai people usually wear yellow shirts to the celebrations, as the colour yellow is associated with Thursday, the same day as the king’s birthday in 1927. Incidentally, in 2024, his birthday falls on Thursday.

Bhumibol Adulyadej, known as King Bhumibol the Great in 1987, was the 9th king of Thailand of the Chakri dynasty, entitled Rama IX.
Having ruled since June 9, 1946, he was currently the longest-serving monarch in the world since the late Emperor Hirohito of Japan in 1989 until he died in 2016, and the third-longest-serving rightful sovereign ruler in world history after King Louis XIV and Queen Elizabeth II. He reigned for over 70 years and during his tenure, he was served by a total of 30 prime ministers beginning with Pridi Banomyong and ending with Prayut Chan-o-cha.
