Happy Hanukkah

Hanukkah, Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה‎, also called Chanukah, is a Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days and nights. It is a Jewish holy day that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem following the revolt against the Greco-Syrian ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes in the second century BCE. It is also known as the Festival of Lights, as a special chandelier called a menorah must be lit for eight nights. Chanukah generally falls in November or December, based on the Gregorian calendar.

Hanukkah 2023 Date

Chanukah is a joyous holiday celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and religious freedom. It gathers families together to celebrate their heritage and commemorate the events of the Maccabean uprising. In 2023, Hanukkah will be celebrated from the evening of Thursday, December 7, 2023, to the nightfall of Friday, December 2023.

Hanukkah Meaning

The term “Hanukkah” means “dedication” in Hebrew and is referred to as the Feast of Tabernacles. The holiday is an important part of Jewish culture and commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. According to legend, the menorah only had enough oil to keep the fire burning for one night, but it miraculously lasted eight nights.

Hanukkah History, Story

The history of Chanukah goes back to 200 BCE, when the land of Israel came under the rule of the Seleucid Empire, led by King Antiochus IV. The king promoted Hellenistic culture and tried to suppress Jewish religious practices. In a revolt, a Jewish priest named Mattathias and his sons, known as the Maccabees, rose against the empire.

The Maccabees had successful control of Jerusalem and the Second Temple. They cleaned the temple and rebuilt the altar, but found only a small jar of oil, enough to light the menorah (seven-branched lampstand) for a day. Miraculously, the oil lasted eight days and nights until a new consecrated oil was prepared. This miracle is at the heart of the Chanukah celebration.

Hanukkah Candles

On Chanukah, a special menorah is lit, called the Hanukkiah. It consists of nine branches, one for each night of the festival, and an additional branch called the shamash, which is used to light the other candles. A candle is also lit on the first night, and an additional candle on each subsequent night, a total of eight candles on the eighth night, until the shamash burns out.

Hanukkah Song

There is a traditional Chanukah song called "Ma'oz Tzur" or "Rock of Ages." It is a hymn that praises God for the miracles and salvation of the Jewish people. It is often sung during the candle-lighting ceremony.
