History of Children's Day

Children's Day was first introduced on the second Sunday of June in 1857 in the United States. Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard, the pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, began the celebration. Leonard organized a special service dedicated to and for the children. Leonard named it Rose Day, but it was later renamed Flower Sunday and then Children's Day.

Children's Day was first officially announced as a national holiday by the Republic of Turkey in 1920, with the date set for April 23. Nonetheless, it was decided that an official authorization was required to illustrate and justify this celebration, and in 1929, the official declaration was nationalized by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder and president of the Republic of Turkey.

In 1925, the initial International Children's Day was declared during the World Conference on Child Welfare in Geneva. Since the 1950s, it has been commemorated on June 1 in vastly communist and post-communist countries. In 1954, the United Nations (UN) declared World Children's Day with the goal for each state to focus its attention on children, their celebration, support for children, their education, and healthy development.

What are the Rights of a Child?

Children's rights are a subset of human rights that pay particular attention to the right to special protection and care afforded to minors.

The United Nations Charter on the Rights of the Child (commonly abbreviated as CRC or UNCRC) is an international human rights treaty that sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health, and cultural rights of children. The Charter defines a child as any person under the age of 18 unless the age of minors is defined differently in the national law of any country. The treaty was signed by 140 countries among 196 participant countries.

It is known as the most accepted standard for children’s rights in the world. It was signed in New York City on 20 November 1989 and came into effect on 2 September 1990.

Children's rights include - the right to association with both parents, human identity and physical security, food, universal state-provided education, health care, and criminal law appropriate to the child's age and development, equal protection of the child's civil rights, and the child's race, sex, free from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, disability, color, ethnicity or other characteristics.

Ireland signed the Convention on 30 September 1990 and ratified it without objection on 28 September 1992.

The United Kingdom ratified the Convention in a series of declarations on 16 December 1991 and made its first report to the Committee on the Rights of the Child in January 1995.

The United States government played an active role in drafting the Convention and signed it on 16 February 1995, but has not ratified it.

Who is a Child?

Generally, a human being under the age of 18 are called children in most regions around the world. The United Nations Convention 1989 on the Rights of the Child considers everyone under the age of 18 as a child. Children below 18 years of age are termed as children in Australia, Bangladesh, India, France, Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, and many other countries.

However, in Germany and Sri Lanka, a child is considered under the age of 14.

In Pakistan, few laws define a female child to be below the age of 16 years as opposed to a male child who is stated as being below 18 years of age.

In Iran, a boy child is defined to be below the age of 15 lunar years, or 14 years and 7 months, whereas a girl child is defined as below the age of 9 lunar years, or 8 years and 9 months solar years.
