Happy Holi

Happy Holi is an antique Hindu tradition and one of the most popular Hindu festivals. It celebrates the immortal and divine devotion of Radha Krishna. The day also symbolizes the victory of good over evil, as it commemorates the victory of Lord Vishnu over Narasimha Narayana Hiranyakashipu. It originated and expanded mainly in the Indian subcontinent but spread to other regions of Asia and parts of the Western countries through the Indian diaspora.

Happy Holi 2024 Date

Holi, the festival of colors, will celebrated on Monday, March 25, 2024, which finds a prominent place among the ancient Hindu festivals. It is a joy to enjoy the vibrant colors in the air. The two-day festival is the perfect way to welcome spring. Everyone, regardless of age, is actively involved in this event. So let’s grab our ‘gulal’ (the colorful powders we throw at each other symbolizing happiness and love) and celebrate the triumph of good over evil.

History of Holi

The title of the event comes from a fascinating story about a fierce king and his determined son. Long ago, it all began with the indomitable evil king, Hiranyakashipu, who became boastful and wanted to be worshiped by every person in the kingdom. But his son Prahlad refused and continued to worship Lord Vishnu. This provoked the wicked king to a great rage, and the consequences caused Prahlad to suffer cruel punishments.

However, Prahlad’s strong faith enabled him to come out of this cruelty and continue to glorify Vishnu. Witnessing his defeat, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika to sit on a pyre with Prahlad on her lap. Holika knew for her fire protection but she didn’t know it would only work if she went into the fire alone. So Holika was burnt, and Lord Vishnu saved Prahlad. The burning of Holika is therefore noted as Holi. This, Holi is also called ‘The triumph of good over evil’.

Another story associated with throwing colored powders at each other is the love story of Krishna and Radha. Krishna in child life was poisoned by several demons and he turned green. He loved Radha and worried that Radha would reject him because of the color of his skin. Krishna's mother suggested playfully coloring Radha’s face with some colors. He followed the advice and Radha fell in love with him.

How to Celebrate Happy Holi 2023

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Holi. We have added a few of those below:

Holi Celebrations

Holi celebrations begin on the night before Holi with Holika Dahan where people amass, perform religious rites in front of the bonfire, and pray for their inner evils to be destroyed as Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu was killed by fire. The following morning is celebrated as Rangwali Holi (Dhuleti), where people drench and splash with colors. Water guns and water-filled balloons are used to play with coloring each other. Groups carrying drums and other musical instruments move from place to place singing and dancing. On this day, people visit relatives, and friends and rivals come together to talk, take pleasure in food and drink, and enjoy the treats of Holi.
