History of St. David’s Day
St. David was the most important figure in the 6th century Welsh Age of Saints, the founder of many religious communities, and the only native-born patron saint of Britain and Ireland. St. David was born in Pembrokeshire in the year 500 A.D., the grandson of Ceredig ap Cunedda, King of Ceredigion. He became a popular preacher, founding monastic Settlements and churches in Wales, Brittany, and England – and, possibly, the abbey of Glastonbury.
In 1120, St. David was canonized after him and soon after, 1 March was added to the Church Calendar as St David’s Day. It was only after his canonization that people began to visit his monastery, even on pilgrimage. There are also beliefs that he went to Jerusalem to fulfil a religious purpose and brought back a stone. That particular stone is now placed on an altar in St. David’s Cathedral. He was famous for his pious austerity, as he is believed to have lived on leeks and water.
