United Nations Day 2023 Date

United Nations Day, also called U.N Day, is a commemorative day celebrated around the world on 24 October annually reflecting the establishment of the United Nations on the date back in 1945. According to Wikipedia, the United Nations General Assembly in 1947, declared 24 October, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, to "be devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for" its work. This year the day will be celebrated on Tuesday, 24 October 2023 internationally.

History Of United Nations Day

After the havoc and devastation of the Second World War, the United Nations was formed in 1945 to prevent future devastating wars. 51 nations met in San Francisco in April and began outlining the UN Charter, which was adopted on 25 June and officially came into force on 24 October. The objectives of the UN are the protection of human rights, the maintenance of international peace and security, humanitarian assistance, the protection of international law, and the promotion of sustainable development.

Their plan to preserve world peace, however, was already undermined by the outbreak of the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union. In the post-Cold War period, between 1988 and 2000, Security Council resolutions more than doubled and peacekeeping costs soared. However, new problems arose with the new members; during the 1990s, the UN faced several crises with Somalia, Mozambique, Haiti, and Yugoslavia. Their mission in Somalia was a failure, as the U.S. military left after casualties in the Battle of Mogadishu and their mission for Bosnia was curtailed by the indecisiveness of the ethnic cleansing.

Who started United Nations Day?

The United States' 32nd President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to start United Nations Day. The first event, called “United Nations Day,” held World War II Allied solidarity and military parades under Franklin D. Roosevelt on 14 June 1942, six months later to the declaration by the United Nations.

Each student, classroom, or grade level is assigned a specific marker and study area; students handcraft the flag of their founding community and organize cultural performances and food as part of the day’s educational activities.
