World Wildlife Day History

On 20 December 2013, the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared March 3 as United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD). This day is significant because it was signed in 1973 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The UNGA resolution established the CITES Secretariat to celebrate this global day for wildlife which is the UN calendar presented in the The UN’s World Wildlife Day has now become the world’s annual event dedicated to wildlife.

Every year, UNGA announces a unique theme that describes different initiatives related to wildlife protection. World Wildlife Day Events

While WWD 2024 events are scheduled for March 3, the United Nations (high level) will be held on March 4, 2024, at United Nations headquarters in New York, United States, and will be broadcast live on United Nations WebTV. This year, the CITES Secretariat sponsored the United Nations Development Programme, WILDLABS, Jackson Wild (World Wildlife Day presenter), and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to interact with them.

It is decided to explore digital innovations for World Wildlife Day 2024 and demonstrate how digital conservation technologies and services can drive wildlife conservation, sustainable and legal wildlife trade, and human-wildlife coexistence, now and for years to come in a more connected world.

How to Celebrate World Wildlife Day

There are many things to do to celebrate WWD. Below we have given you 5 ways to celebrate World Wildlife Day:

1. JOIN AN ORGANIZATION THAT HELPS WILDLIFE

Many different organizations help wildlife in different ways. If you are interested in supporting a specific habitat or species, or wildlife in general, there may be a group somewhere that you can join and support their efforts.

2. DISPOSE ANY TRASH YOU SEE

Trash can harm birds, fish, and other wildlife animals. So make sure you pick up any debris you see and dispose of it properly. Also, recycle whenever possible, and reduce waste. For example, instead of using disposable water bottles, choose to use less packaging whenever possible.

3. ENRICH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PLANTS AND WILDLIFE

Do a little research about the wildlife around you. You can also learn about some of the threats to these plants and wildlife. If one of the first incidents is caused by human trafficking, do your part to help reduce this threat.

4. DETERMINE THE THEME FOR THE YEAR

Every year, World Wildlife Day arrives with a unique and meaningful theme. For example, the theme for World Wildlife Day in 2024 will focus on connecting people and the planet. Take some time to research and work on the theme for the year, and celebrate WWD keeping this theme in mind.

5. SPREAD AWARENESSES

Some people may not be aware that Wildlife Day exists. Therefore, telling them about it would be a great way to spread the word. Explain to them what World Wildlife Day is, and how they can get involved on this day. You can also talk about what wildlife is in the area, what dangers they face, and what they can do to minimize it.
