Overview
Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which Christians believe took place on the third day after his crucifixion. It ends Holy Week and the 40-day season of Lent, and begins the Easter season.
Easter is a movable feast. In Western churches it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, so it can be any date between March 22 and April 25. Many Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar to calculate the date, so their Easter is often later.
History
The earliest Christians celebrated the resurrection alongside the Jewish Passover. In AD 325 the Council of Nicaea agreed that all churches should celebrate Easter on the same Sunday, separate from the Jewish calendar. The calculation of the date, known as the computus, became the basis of the rule still used today.
- 325The Council of Nicaea seeks a common date for Easter.
- 1582The Gregorian calendar reform changes how Western churches calculate Easter.
