Overview
Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, during the Hajj pilgrimage. Muslims attend a morning prayer, and families who can afford it sacrifice an animal and share the meat with relatives, neighbours and people in need.
The date depends on the lunar calendar and moon sighting, so it can differ by a day between countries.
History
The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, who provided a ram instead.
