Father's Day celebrates fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers and every father figure. Families mark it with cards, gifts, meals and time spent together.
The third Sunday of June is the most common date, but some countries celebrate at other times — Australia and New Zealand in September, and many Catholic countries on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph.
History
Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, was raised with her siblings by her widowed father, a Civil War veteran. Inspired by Mother's Day, she organised the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane in June 1910. The idea spread slowly; President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national holiday in 1972.
