Mother's Day celebrates mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers and every mother figure. People give cards, flowers and gifts, share a meal or simply spend time together.
The date varies around the world. The second Sunday of May is the most widely used date; the United Kingdom celebrates Mothering Sunday during Lent, many Arab countries on March 21, and Thailand on August 12.
History
The modern Mother's Day began with Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial for her mother, the community organiser Ann Reeves Jarvis, at a church in Grafton, West Virginia, in May 1908. She then campaigned for a national day. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making the second Sunday of May Mother's Day in the United States.
Anna Jarvis later opposed the commercialisation of the day she had created, arguing that it should be about personal gratitude rather than purchased gifts.
