Overview
World Music Day, known in France as Fête de la Musique, is held every June 21. Musicians of every level perform free in streets, squares, parks and cafés, and anyone can join in.
The event has spread to cities in more than 100 countries, often under the name Make Music Day.
History
France's Minister of Culture Jack Lang and music director Maurice Fleuret launched the first Fête de la Musique in Paris on June 21, 1982. The name is a play on words: "faites de la musique" means "make music". The idea was to bring music out of concert halls and into public spaces for everyone.
