Dussehra, also called Vijaya Dashami and Dasara, is a Hindu festival celebrating the triumph of good over evil. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Ashvin (September–October), the seventh month of the Hindu calendar. It symbolizes the victory of Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, over the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who kidnapped Rama’s wife, Sita. It also coincides with the nine-day of Navratri festival and the tenth day of Durga Puja.

Dussehra, Dasara, or Vijayadashami, in Hinduism, marks the victory of Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, over the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who abducted Rama’s wife Sita. The name, Dussehra, is extracted from the Sanskrit words dasha which means “ten” and hara means “victory”. In 2023, Dussehra or Vijayadashmi will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
Dussehra History
Vijayadashami has its roots in Hindu mythology and celebrates Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana. Based on the epic Ramayana, Rama, with the help of his divine monkey army, defeated Ravana and rescued his wife Sita, who was abducted by the demon king. This victory of good over evil and light over darkness is the central theme of Dasara.
