Turkey Republic Day 2023

Republic Day in Turkey, the official name Cumhuriyet Bayramı (Turkish), is a public holiday that commemorates the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on February 29, 1923. This year, Turkey Republic Day will be celebrated on Sunday, 29 October 2023.

History of Turkey Republic Day

Turkey became a republic on May 23, 1920, when the Grand National Assembly opened in Ankara. That year, the Turkish parliament first convened, and the crumbling Ottoman Empire was occupied by Allied forces in almost every corner.

Turkey's War of Independence against the occupying Allied Powers led to the abolition of the Sultanate on November 1, 1922, and the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923. The brand new Turkish parliament announced the establishment of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923 which ended the Ottoman Empire formally.

Mustafa Kemal, leader of the Turkish National Liberation War and later known as ‘Atatürk’ (father of the Turks), was unanimously elected the first president of the Republic on the same day. Turkey became a secular, unitary, and parliamentary republic after reforms initiated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Turkey Republic Day Significance

The date October 29 is Republic Day, under law no. 2429 of 1981, is a national holiday, and therefore all government offices are closed on that day. The holiday is a reminder of the historic moment when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk declared that Turkey would henceforth be a republic.

Besides, the day is also observed by Northern Cyprus. The red and white colors of Turkey's national flag are used in decorations.

How to Celebrate Turkey Republic Day

Republic Day is a national celebration in Turkey marked by patriotic displays. Like other autumn events, Republic Day is often celebrated outdoors. Fireworks, events at schools, cultural programs, concerts, and parades are the major ways to celebrate the day.

The decorations such as streamers, balloons, and clothing are usually red and white, the colors of the Turkish national flag. Parades are held in the morning, and concerts and fireworks displays begin after dark in the evening in parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

Republic Day is associated with fireworks and patriotic songs, such as the 10th anniversary of March. Istanbul holds the largest fireworks display in the country. Often there are displays on the Bosporus. The other displays include Ankara’s Ulus; and in İzmir, along the İzmir Gulf and Gündoğdu Square.

Flag of Turkey and Its Significance

Turkey National Flag

The national flag of Turkey (officially the Turkish flag; Turkish: Türk bayrağı), is a red background consisting of a white star and crescent. The flag is often referred to as the “red flag” (al Barak). The present Turkish flag is directly derived from the latest Ottoman flag, which was adopted in the late 18th century and acquired its final form in 1844.

The measurements, geometric proportions, and exact tone of red of the Turkish flag were legally standardized with the Turkish Flag Law dated May 1936. The flag has an official proportion of 2:3.

The star and crescent design first appeared on Ottoman flags in the late 18th or early 19th century. The flag of the Ottoman Empire was introduced in 1844 with a white star and red stripe.

National Symbols of Turkey

Turkey does not have an official national emblem, but the crescent and star design on the national flag is used as the de facto national emblem for Turkish passports, Turkish identity cards, and at missions' diplomatic relations with Turkey.

Other Turkish National symbols include:

  • National Bird: the Redwing
  • National Flower: Tulips
  • National Animal: grey wolf
  • National Tree: Turkey Oak
  • National Fruit: Sultana grapes

Turkey National Anthem

"İstiklâl Marşı" is the national anthem of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It was officially adopted on March 12, 1921, by the Grand National Assembly, two and a half years before the country's founding on October 29, 1923.

It has a motivational musical saga for soldiers fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as such an Anthem aspirational for a Republic which was being established.

National Motto of Turkey

A famous motto of the Republic of Turkey is -

"Ne Mutlu Türküm diyene!"  which means in English is: "How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!". These words were delivered on the 10th anniversary by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk marking the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1933, for the first time.
